Data processing is vital to innovation in a rapidly changing world. With the advancement of information and communication technologies, an ever-increasing large volume of data contributes to solutions addressing societal challenges such as health and demographic change and ageing, food security, and clean energy. The wide-spread use of information technology in every sector of life highlights the value of this commodity which necessitates its security. The theme of Data Science and Security encompasses strong research in areas such as robotics, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, data protection, privacy and cyber security and civil and legal protection.

This theme addresses issues in the digital Economy including, innovation, development, FinTech, and economic growth. From managing complex change, digitization of labor, value creation, work-based learning, employment, development and leadership in organizations and professions, the role of institutions, intellectual property law in the digital economy, international law and regulation like Digital Economy Act, to the creative and digital economies, adaptive systems, design and material culture, policy, and sustainable energy technologies.
Colleges who might participate: CCIS, CBA, CE and CL
This theme supports social, health and sport related sciences research to improve the understanding and management of the impact these sciences on society. Emphasis is placed on building a stronger connection between teaching, learning, and research that are vital to the long-term success of students and higher education. Research will seek to advance the development of a meaningful and practical body of knowledge about the ways of sustainable personal development, learning and teaching effectiveness in higher education, particularly in such areas as life-long learning and professional development, student achievement of learning outcomes, innovative teaching strategies, and healthy lifestyles that lead to student success, values education, sustainability in higher education, and student support services as well as good health and well-being.
Colleges who might participate: CH, TLC, CBA, CCIS, DES, and E4E
This theme is working to tackle one of the greatest challenges of the 21st Century – maintaining clean, secure and affordable supplies as part of a sustainable energy future. Energy and environment are co-related in the technological and scientific aspects including energy conservation, and the interaction of energy forms and systems with the physical environment. The theme draws on scientific, technical, environmental, legal, economic, political and societal/behavioral expertise. It particularly aims to encourage interdisciplinary research which is critical to meeting many of the scientific challenges of relevance to both science and society. The theme also provides an umbrella for developing new collaborative research and enterprise projects and networks.
This theme also involves sustainable construction and engineering management solutions; safety; information technology; visualization tools and sustainable building technologies and materials. Architectural; Planning and Design. The subjects embraced here are: sustainable design and the built environment; conservation and regeneration; urban design and town planning; low carbon design solutions and sustainable building technologies and materials

It is interesting how emerging technologies are transforming the way we live, the way we work and the way we learn and many other aspects of our lives. Emerging technologies generated new types of systems and domains, which in turn created new types of security problems and threats in the cyberspace. It is very important for any nation to cope with these new transformations and update its systems. PSU is required to conduct cutting-edge applied research in these areas and support the efforts of KSA to cope with these fast de velopments.
New technological developments are rapidly being adopted in sectors that include manufacturing, construction, and Distributed Autonomous Systems, such as drones, robots, self-driving cars, software autonomous systems such as Blockchain, Software Robots, and many military and security systems – autonomy is one of one of the fashions of this age, and is one of our strength areas. These developments will be transformative, offering a new level of efficiency, flexibility, and responsiveness across a range of industries.
Industrial innovation is increasingly based on scientific progress. It requires multidisciplinary knowledge from several scientific disciplines, including mathematics, statistics, physics, as well as a range of other fields. Today’s challenges faced by academia and industry are becoming more complex that they require the help of mathematical scientists. Research in mathematics contributes to advances in areas such as business, computing, cyber security, digital data compression and mining.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
In the last few years, Prince Sultan University has increasingly given research more attention and weight. This finally contributed to the establishment of the Research and Initiatives Center (RIC in short), in September 2017. Since then, the University has taken several brave decisions to promote research and has resulted in several new research programs and initiatives. First, the University adopted a decentralized strategy for research governance, giving colleges their financial independence and decision making about conference attendance, project proposal evaluation, research labs, to name a few. This change from the fully centralized research strategy to a decentralized one has radically improved the research productivity and increased the motivation of researchers. Besides, several research programs were established, allowing faculty members to invite top scholars as distinguished visiting professors, and also invite Ph.D. students from abroad for research internships of one to six months. These are just a sample of the initiatives that Prince Sultan University has made, and that resulted in a highly positive impact on the research environment. At PSU, we are very proud and enthusiastic about the achievements made in research, and we are working forward to reach the highest level of excellence in research in the near future. I also take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the efforts of the previous RIC Director Dr. Khaled Almustafa and his team for paving the way to a productive research environment and we do hope to continue this success.
